Love among the Corinthians (what I would have said if you’d asked)

.
.
It occurs to me today
that love is not contingent upon
whether or not you show up
whether or not you are silent
whether or not you behave
whether or not I “get” you or
whether or not you fit within
the confines where I feel safe

It occurs to me today
that love is not up to me
to grant or disregard or approve
to figure out or sum up
or even to recognize

It occurs to me today
that love doesn’t care about “the right time”
that yes it can come and go unbidden
and leave scars
and be irritating
painful
feverish
provoking
and deadly serious
.
It occurs to me just now that love is

chicken pox
.
.
I was never vaccinated
